What's covered on the day?

This awareness session on learning disability, autism and autistic spectrum will equip staff members with the essential knowledge of the definitions, history and demographics of the disorders. 


It will list and explore the Core Capabilities Framework for supporting individuals with Autism. It will also discuss with the staff the associated characteristics, abilities, symptoms and some of the challenges that are potentially faced when caring and supporting for individuals. 

It will also highlight examples of good healthcare practices and some of the negative experiences and stereotypes that are applied to individuals who have a learning disability and/or autism.

Assessment


There is no formal assessment of this awareness session, although the trainer will utilise a range of teaching and assessment strategies to ensure the development and understanding of the learning outcomes. Learners will complete a knowledge assessment following the completion of the course, allowing them to demonstrate an understanding of Learning Disabilities, Autism, ASD and how to provide care and support for individuals.

* The need for clear communication and ensuring it is person centred

* List and explore the Autism Core Capabilities framework for supporting an individual with autism

* Discuss the demographics around an individual with learning disability autism and autistic spectrum disorders

* Define the associated characteristics of individuals with a learning disability and /or autistic or ASD

* Recognise, respect and value individuals with a learning disability and /or autistic differences and challenges negative stereotyping

* Highlight good person-centred practices for caring and supporting individuals with a learning disability and /or autism and respond with respect and compassion

* Demonstrate positivity, recognising the strengths and abilities of individuals with a learning disability and /or autistic

* Describe managing the behaviour that challenges of individuals with learning disabilities and /or autistic
