This 1-Day Enteral tube Feeding training course will explain the various methods of enteral feeding (including PEG and NG) and provide you with the practical knowledge to care for someone being fed enterally.
You will learn about caring for clients requiring enteral feeding in the community and gain hands on experience in simulated practice learning, replicating situations in enteral care you are likely to encounter. The aim is to improve care, enhance patient safety and reduce risks of infection in a safe and controlled environment.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This course is suitable for any healthcare professional with the responsibility of caring for an individual with a feeding tube. Including but not limited to: -
- Registered Nurses
- Complex Care Staff
- Support Workers
- Healthcare Assistants
Please note: You do not need to have prior knowledge of Enteral feeding in order to attend this Enteral Feeding awareness course.
COURSE CONTENT
- Anatomy of the gastrointestinal system
- Overview of gastrostomies including low profile feeding devices and PEG tubes
- Understand indications for gastrostomy
- Care of the client and your responsibilities with a gastrostomy & jejunostomy
- Stoma care and infection prevention control
- Complications of a PEG/NG
- Other Care Considerations
- Feeding via a gastrostomy tube, including bolus, intermittent gravity and continuous pump feeds
- Overview of medication administration via G-Tube
- Demonstration in simulated practice setting up feed extension tube for low profile feeding tubes
- Setting up a feed in simulated practice
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understand what enteral feeds are
- Have an awareness of anatomy and physiology of the digestive system
- Have a basic understanding of surgical insertion of feeding tubes in relation to job role
- Manage infection risks associated with established feeding tubes
- Review standard procedures in PEG feeding for nutrition purposes
- Review standard procedures in the delivery of medication via feeding tubes
- Practically demonstrate standard procedures in delivery of feed and medication via feeding tubes
