Senior Healthcare Support Workers help registered practitioners deliver healthcare services to people. As an experienced support worker, you carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare tasks, under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner.

Training benefits

On completion of this 15 month standard, apprentices will demonstrate a range of excellent skills such high quality, compassionate healthcare, following standards and always acting within the limits of your competence. The apprenticeship standards “knowledge, skills and behaviours” are developed over the course of the programme via scheduled learning interventions with employer mentors and Lifetime Regional Trainers. Learning activities and coaching sessions are aligned to support the learner to learn, practice and prepare for End Point Assessment.

What’s covered?

  • Health and Wellbeing – for example, gather evidence to assist in obtaining a client history, review health related data and information.
  • Duty of care and candour, safeguarding, equality and diversity – for example, how discrimination can happen; how to deal with conflicts between a person’s rights and a duty of care.
  • Person centred care and support – for example, demonstrate what it means in practice to promote and provide person centred care and support by obtaining valid consent.
  • Communication and Handling information – for example, observe and record verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Personal, people and quality improvement – for example, act as a role model; mentor peers; deliver training through demonstration and instruction.
  • Health, safety and security – for example, use a range of techniques for infection prevention and control, e.g. waste management, spillage, hand washing, use of Personal Protective Equipment.

Apprentices will also select from one of the following options relating to their job role:

  • Option 1 – Adult Nursing which includes a Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support.
  • Option 2 – Maternity which includes a Level 3 Diploma in Maternity and Paediatric Support.
  • Option 3 – Theatre which includes a Level 3 Diploma in Perioperative Support.
  • Option 4 – Mental Health which includes a Level 3 Diploma in Mental Health Care

Assessment Practice

Regular evaluation sessions with managers and trainers will allow apprentices to practice end assessment activities such as practical observations, Q&A sessions and a series of professional discussions. To prepare for a final end point assessment apprentices will be asked to complete a number of activities in-between visits to build confidence and competence in the knowledge, skills and behaviours areas.

End Point Assessment:

Apprentices access End Point Assessment following a gateway discussion with their employer and Regional Trainer where entry requirements are discussed, checked and recorded including functional skills at the required level. The Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 End Point Assessment will include the following types of assessment:

  • Multiple Choice Questions
  • Observation of Practice
  • Learning Journal & Interview
