Addiction, dependency and recovery

Course overview:
Exploring the role of drugs within society, the factors that contribute to the drug using experience, how people change and the routes to recovery. Learn what tolerance, withdrawal, addiction and dependency mean and how this relates to a clear understanding of recovery.

This comprehensive overview will develop or refresh your confidence to work with drug and alcohol users.

Course aim:

• To develop the groups understanding of critical issues in working with drug use and addiction

Course objectives:

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

• Understand the context of drug use
• Describe the key concepts of dependency and addiction
• Understand the philosophy of harm reduction
• Identify the client’s readiness for change
• Assess the clients needs and make appropriate referral/interventions

Maximum group size: 16 people

Target audience:

This course is applicable to practitioners supporting drug users.
