Perinatal Mental Health for Health and Social Care Practitioners

This course will be relevant if you wish to advance your skills and knowledge in perinatal mental health. It will be particularly appropriate if you are a midwife, health visitor, neonatal nurse, mental health nurse or other health and social care professional who works with women and their families in pregnancy and up to one year after birth.

This course is offered at Level 3 (Degree) and Masters level and is delivered at our Glenside Campus.

Course content includes:

• Perinatal mental health and women's experiences of mental illness
• Assessment, screening, referral and treatment of women with moderate and server perinatal mental illness
• Advance skills for practice when working with women and their families
• The wider context of practice in relation to perinatal mental health.

Delivery:

Study time will total 48 CPD hours with contact time including lectures, seminars, simulation and workshops.

Teaching will be by subject specialists such as specialist midwives and health visitors, psychologists and specialist mental health lecturers. Service user organisations and visiting guest speakers will share their experiences and inform students about specific areas and specific organisations/services.

The course provides opportunities for you to critically evaluate current guidelines, national and local service provision and identify areas for innovation in practice and local service development, which could be taken forward as a future work-based project.
