Specialist Nurse Educator
This course combines a half day practical face-to-face workshop with a fully online theory course covering all the elements you will need to start taking blood. You will be informed on the background and rationale for blood taking practice and an exploration of the equipment and processes to bring you up to speed with the skill.
The course is suitable for anyone new to phlebotomy or looking for a practical skills workshop to accompany the theory training. This could include those who have not practiced their skills for some time or may be changing their role in healthcare organisations.
This course is delivered in two parts:
Part 1 – The theory element
This is delivered fully online in our interactive e-learning course which you will be able to access straight away after checkout. You can take the course in your own time and we would strongly recommend completing the course before your practical workshop session.
Part 2 – The practical workshop
This half day face to face practical workshop will provide you with hands on time with our experienced trainer to practice all the skills that you will have learned about in your theory part of the course.
Practical face-to-face workshop session times are:
AM sessions – 9.00am – 12.30pm
PM session – 1.30pm – 5pm
You will also be given access to the Health Academy phlebotomy competency workbook to fill in during and after the course
You will observe practical demonstrations throughout the course and you will have the option to explore/practice with the equipment.
The course doesn't cover cannulation. This requires an additional course.
Whilst the course covers blood taking techniques for children, it does not cover techniques such as scalp and heel prick samples which are specialist skills requiring additional training.
Arterial blood gas technique and analysis are not covered on this course
Venous blood gases can be obtained from the principles learned on this course. However, using blood gas machines and blood gas analysis are not covered on the course.
A reminder, this course is made up of two elements, the practical workshop and the theory element. In order to complete this course, both elements must be completed.
Practical face-to-face workshop session times are:
AM sessions - 9.00am - 12.30pm
PM session - 1.30pm - 5pm
The following equipment will be provided during the practical workshop.
